White Forest Zen Monastery

Catskill Zendo

Venerable Hye Seong Sunim, Abbot and Zen Master

The Catskill Zendo is located in the White Forest Zen Buddhist Monastery (Bak Lim Sa) located in Summitville, Sullivan County, New York.  Regular Zen services are held on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. Practice includes seated meditation (chamson [Korean], zazen [Japanese]), koan (zen paradox) study, chanting, bowing, and Dharma (teaching) discourses. This style of Zen traces its roots to the ancient Chinese Zen Masters Hui-Neng (the Sixth Patriarch of Zen) and Lin-Chi (Rinzai). Personal instruction in meditation and Buddhist Teachings, and guidance in establishing a home practice schedule, are given by the Dharma teachers in English.

The Zendo provides a special transmission outside the scriptures, with no dependence on words or letters  and a direct pointing to the Mind.  The Zendo, situated on 180 acres of mountain property, is presently non-residential, with members commuting from the Mid-Hudson, Catskill, North Jersey areas. However, limited accommodations for overnight or short-term stays are available by special arrangement with the Abbot or resident monk. In the very near future, the Zendo will hold weekend temple-stays (retreats).  Check back with us soon for temple-stay times and dates.  Plans are also being made for a long-term residential facility. The Abbot and Zen Master of the Catskill Zendo, is Hye Seong, Sunim, a renowned Buddhist Monk of the Chogye Order.  He is also Abbot of Kum Kyang Sa Temple in Pusan, South Korea.
